ACFN Land Code
Taking control of our lands for future generations
Our Nation is working toward the development and approval of a Land Code — a powerful step toward reclaiming full control over how we govern, protect and develop our reserve lands and natural resources. A Land Code can only come into effect through a community “YES” vote. Through the Framework Agreement on First Nation Land Management Act, we have the opportunity to create our own Land Code, replacing the land-related sections of the Indian Act with our own community-made law. With a Land Code, we decide how our reserve land is managed — not a minister in Ottawa.
Why does it matter?
A “YES” vote on a Land Code means:
Local control over land use, permits, leases and development.
Faster decisions, made by our leadership and guided by community voices.
Protection of our traditions and sacred places through our own laws.
More opportunities for housing, jobs and sustainability on our terms.
Canada will no longer have authority over the management of our reserve lands.
What stays the same?
Reserve lands remain reserve lands.
Treaty rights and fiduciary duties are not affected — this includes taxation and tax exemption.
We remain a First Nation under Canadian law — we simply take back control of our reserve land management.
